What is RI to NRI Status Change? 

RI to NRI Status Change is the process of converting your existing Resident Indian (RI) trading and Demat account into an NRI account after you move abroad and attain NRI status.

Unlike the earlier process, you do not need to close your existing account and open a new one. Your existing account can be converted to NRI status by completing the required documentation.

Who should apply for RI to NRI Status Change? 

You should apply if:

  • You were previously a Resident Indian.
  • You have become an NRI and are residing outside India.
  • You wish to continue investing and trading through your existing account.

What documents are required?

  • PAN Card
  • Passport
  • Valid Visa / Work Permit / Residence Permit / OCI (as applicable)
  • Overseas Address Proof
  • NRE/NRO Bank Proof or Bank Statement
  • Nominee Proof (if nominee details are being updated)

You will also need to complete and sign the required account modification forms.

What is the process?

  1. Contact our NRI Team via email (nri@navia.co.in) and request RI to NRI Status Change.
  2. Complete the required forms and share scanned copies along with supporting documents.
  3. Our team will verify the documents and guide you on any corrections if required.
  4. Once verified, courier the signed physical documents to us.
  5. We will process the KRA update and regulatory approvals required for status conversion.
  6. Upon successful approval, your account status will be updated from RI to NRI.

Do I need to close my existing account? 

No. Your existing trading and Demat account can be converted to NRI status without closure, subject to successful completion of the required documentation and approvals.

How long does the process take? 

The timeline depends on document verification, KRA registration, and regulatory approvals. Our team will keep you informed throughout the process and provide regular updates.

Will I be able to continue trading after the status change? 

Yes. Once the RI to NRI status conversion is completed, you can continue investing and trading through your updated NRI account as per applicable regulations.
